Scientific Name and Overview
The Areca Palm (Dypsis lutescens), also known as the Butterfly Palm, Golden Cane Palm, or Yellow Palm, is a popular and attractive tropical plant. Native to Madagascar, this palm is widely cultivated as both an indoor houseplant and an outdoor landscape plant due to its lush, feathery fronds and bright green foliage. Its graceful arching stems resemble butterfly wings, earning it the nickname "Butterfly Palm."
Physical Description
· Height and Spread: Grows up to 6–10 meters (20–35 feet) outdoors but remains smaller indoors, reaching 1.8–2.4 meters (6–8 feet).
· Fronds: The Areca Palm has long, feathery, arching fronds composed of narrow, lance-shaped leaflets. Each frond can grow up to 2.5 meters (8 feet) long.
· Stems: The smooth, yellowish-green stems form clumps, giving the plant a bamboo-like appearance.
· Flowers and Fruits: Produces small yellow flowers in clusters, followed by yellow to orange oval-shaped fruits, though these are more common in outdoor specimens.
